Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. salt
    1 1/2 Tbsp. alum
    1 qt. vinegar
    1 qt. sugar
    2 Tbsp. pickling spice
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers in a gallon glass jar. Add water with salt, enough water to cover pickles. Let stand at room temperature for 7 days; drain and rinse. Add alum with enough water to cover pickles and let stand 24 hours; drain and rinse. Boil vinegar, sugar and pickling spice. Pour over pickles, then add 1 cup sugar each day for the next 3 days. Do not refrigerate. Use right out of the jar.
