Ingredients
-
4 to 6 slices French bread
1 c. milk
1 egg
1/4 tsp. salt
pinch of pepper
1/2 tsp. sugar
butter or margarine (for frying)
Preparation
-
Use bread that is not quite fresh, about 2 days old.
Cut the French bread into slices about 1/2-inch thick.
Beat milk, egg, salt, pepper and sugar together in a shallow bowl.
Heat a large heavy skillet.
Melt about 2 tablespoons butter or margarine. When fat is hot and sizzling, soak slices of bread in egg-milk mixture. Leave them in liquid until they are wet through, but do not fall apart.
Fry bread quickly until golden brown.
