Ingredients

1 1/4 c. butter or margarine
1/3 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 c. molasses
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. ginger
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 pinch of cloves
5 c. flour
1/2 c. boiling water
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
Preparation

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add molasses and egg; mix until well blended.
Sift spices and 2 cups of flour together and add to the creamed mixture, alternating with the boiling water.
Add another cup of flour and mix well.
Add remaining 2 cups of flour with the baking soda and the salt.
Stir thoroughly.
