Ingredients

3 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. allspice
3/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
3/4 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. shredded apple, peeled
3 Tbsp. cider vinegar
3/4 c. walnuts, chopped
Preparation

Mix and sift flour, baking soda and spices.
Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Add vanilla.
Stir in flour mixture, alternating with the apples and the 3 tablespoons of cider vinegar, mixed with the water to make 3/4 cup of the vinegar liquid.
Stir in walnuts. Pour into greased 11 x 4 x 2-inch loaf pan and bake at 350\u00b0 for 1 1/2 hours or until done.
Cool.
Makes one loaf.
