Salt Rising Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sweet milk
    1 level Tbsp. sugar
    2 c. hot water (not boiling)
    1 tsp. salt
    1 Tbsp. cornmeal (until thick batter is formed)
Preparation
    Place in hot water (stir occasionally) until yeast begins to rise, about 4 to 5 hours.
    Make stiff dough, adding salt and shortening.
    Place in greased loaf pan.
    Grease loaf with melted shortening.
    Raise over hot water.
    Bake in moderate oven, beginning slowly.
