Southern Peanut Butter Pie - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. powdered sugar
    1/2 c. creamy peanut butter
    3 eggs, separated
    2/3 c. sugar
    1/8 tsp. salt
    1/4 c. cornstarch
    2 c. milk, scalded
    2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
    1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
    1 (9-inch) pie shell, baked and cooled
    1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
Preparation
    Mix together the powdered sugar and peanut butter until it is a coarse, crumbled mixture; set aside.
    Beat egg yolks until fluffy.
    Combine sugar, salt and cornstarch; beat into egg yolks. Beat in hot milk gradually.
    Cook in a double boiler until smooth and thick, stirring constantly.
    Remove from heat.
    Add butter and vanilla.
    Cover bottom of pie shell with 2/3 of the peanut butter mixture.
    Pour in the hot custard.
