12 Tbsp. (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
3/4 c. granulated sugar
1 large egg yolk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 2/3 c. flour
1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder plus 2 Tbsp. (for icing)
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. confectioners sugar
1/4 c. milk
red food coloring (optional)
Preparation

Preheat oven to 350\u00b0.
Using an electric mixer, beat butter until fluffy.
Scrape bowl as needed.
Add granulated sugar and beat until combined.
Beat in egg yolk, vanilla and then flour, 1/3 cup cocoa powder and salt.
Scrape dough onto a piece of waxed paper; pat into a disc and cover with another piece of waxed paper.
Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick.
Using a 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped cutter, cut out cookies; place on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake until tops are firm and cookies are set around the edges, about 15 minutes.
Let cool 5 minutes, then transfer the cookies to racks to cool completely.
