Italian Cream Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. shortening
    1/2 c. margarine
    2 c. sugar
    5 eggs (at room temperature), separated
    1 c. buttermilk
    1 tsp. baking soda
    2 c. flour
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 2/3 c. coconut
    1 c. chopped nuts
    3/4 c. chopped maraschino cherries
Preparation
    Blend shortening, margarine and sugar until creamy.
    Blend egg yolks into mixture; add baking soda to buttermilk.
    Stir buttermilk and flour into mixture alternating into egg mixture. Beat egg whites until stiff, then add vanilla and fold into cake mixture, then fold in coconut (optional).
