Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 lb. green tomatoes or cucumbers
    1/3 c. pickling salt
    5 c. cold water
    2 c. vinegar with 1/2 c. water
    1 2/3 c. sugar
    1 tsp. celery seed
    2 tsp. prepared mustard
    1 tsp. ginger
    1/4 tsp. turmeric
    few dashes red pepper
Preparation
    Wash and slice vegetables.
    Place in enamelware or glass bowl. Sprinkle with salt and add water.
    Cover and let stand 2 to 4 hours or overnight.
    Turn into colander and drain for 10 to 15 minutes. Put into kettle.
    Add some sliced onion, then vinegar, sugar and spices.
    Heat to boiling.
    Simmer 3 to 4 minutes.
    Pack, seal 3 to 5 pints for 5 minutes in boiling water bath.
