Caramel Frosting(50 Years Old) - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. soft oleo or butter
    3 c. sugar
    1 1/2 c. buttermilk
    1 1/2 tsp. soda
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Cream butter.
    Gradually add sugar, beating well with hand. (Now mixer.)
    Dissolve soda in milk.
    Add cream mixture; beat well.
    Cook in heavy, large saucepan, stirring constantly, until it reaches a soft ball stage or 234\u00b0.
    Remove from heat and add vanilla.
    Do not stir.
    Cook 10 minutes.
    Mix until thick enough to spread, approximately 10 minutes.
    Spread on cooled cake.
    (Can use mixer on medium speed now, if you like.)
