Date Nut Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 (7 oz.) pkg. dates
    1 1/2 c. water
    2 tsp. baking soda
    1 c. brown sugar
    1 Tbsp. shortening
    1 egg
    2 1/4 c. flour
    1 tsp. vanilla
    chopped nutmeats (your choice)
Preparation
    Mix dates, water and soda.
    Simmer 10 minutes.
    Add sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla, alternating with flour.
    Lastly, fold in nuts.
    Bake in greased loaf pans at 350\u00b0 for 1 hour.
