Greek Macaroni Squares(Pastitsio) - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 large onions, finely chopped
    1/2 c. butter or margarine
    2 1/2 lb. lean ground beef
    2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    2 tsp. salt
    14 oz. elbow macaroni
    1/2 lb. grated cheese (Romano, Parmesan or Kefalotiri)
    cinnamon
    custard sauce
    2 cloves garlic, minced
Preparation
    In a large frying pan, saute onions in butter until golden; add meat until browned.
    Add tomato sauce, cinnamon, salt and garlic; cover and simmer 1/2 hour or until thickened.
    Cook macaroni in salted water until barely tender (about 12 minutes); drain and rinse under cold water.
    Drain thoroughly.
    Butter a 9 x 13-inch pan.
    Alternate layers of macaroni, meat sauce and cheese. Dust with cinnamon.
    Pour custard sauce over macaroni.
