Party Jewel Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 egg, well beaten
    1 c. Pet milk
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1 1/4 c. fresh coconut
    1 c. cut candied cherries
    1 pkg. white or yellow cake mix
    1 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 c. butter or margarine
    1 c. chopped nuts
Preparation
    Bake cake mix according to directions on package in two or three 9-inch round cake pans.
    Cool cake.
    Mix well beaten egg, sugar, Pet milk, vanilla, salt and butter in a 2-quart saucepan. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture thickens, about 8 or 10 minutes.
    Do not boil.
    Take off of heat.
    Stir in coconut, nuts and cherries.
    Cool.
    Spread cherry mixture between and on top of layers.
    Decorate with nuts and cherries.
    Chill 6 to 8 hours to let flavor blend.
