California Muffins - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. boiling water
    2 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 c. sugar
    1 egg
    1 egg yolk
    2 c. buttermilk
    2 1/2 c. flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 c. all-bran cereal
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
    1 c. chopped dates or raisins
Preparation
    Dissolve soda in boiling water; cool.
    Cream together shortening and sugar.
    Add water and 1 egg, beating well.
    Stir in remaining ingredients in order given, beating well after each addition.
    Store in refrigerator overnight or up to 6 weeks.
    Bake at 375\u00b0 for 20 minutes.
    Makes 3 dozen muffins.
