No Heat Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    7 lb. whole cucumbers
    salt (2 c. to 1 gal. water)
    alum (2 to 3 Tbsp. to 1 gal. water)
    vinegar (5%)
    5 lb. sugar
    mixed pickling spice
    cloves (ground)
Preparation
    Soak whole cucumbers in salt water 1 week.
    Wash cucumbers and slice thin.
    Soak in alum for 24 hours.
    Rinse well.
    Cover with vinegar and let stand 24 hours.
    Pour off vinegar.
    Layer cucumbers with sugar and spices (mixed pickling spice and cloves). More than 5 pounds of sugar may be used.
    These pickles do not have to be sealed.
