Grandma Goodfellow'S Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 qt. sliced cucumbers
    6 medium white onions, sliced
    2 green peppers, sliced
    3 cloves garlic
    1/3 c. coarse salt
    3 c. cider vinegar
    4 c. sugar or less to taste
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers thinly.
    Add onions, peppers and whole garlic cloves.
    Add salt.
    Cover with cracked ice; mix thoroughly.
    Let stand 3 hours.
    Drain well.
    Combine remaining ingredients in large kettle.
    Add cucumber mixture; bring just to a boil.
    Seal in hot jars.
    Process 5 minutes in boiling water bath.
    Makes 8 pints.
