Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. cucumbers
    8 small white onions
    2 green peppers, shredded
    1/2 c. salt
    2 (10 oz.) bags cubed ice
    5 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1 tsp. celery seed
    5 c. vinegar
Preparation
    Select crisp, fresh cucumbers; wash, but do not pare them. Slice crosswise in paper-thin slices.
    Slice the onions thin and cut the peppers into fine shreds.
    Mix the salt with the vegetables and bury pieces of cracked ice in the mixture.
    Cover with a weighted lid and let stand 3 hours; drain thoroughly.
