Rose Cake(1879) - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 lb. butter
    1 lb. sugar
    1 lb. flour
    1/2 c. milk
    12 egg whites, beaten stiff
Preparation
    Beat to a cream the butter, sugar, flour and milk.
    Add beaten egg whites.
    Color 1/2 the batter pink.
    Layer batter in 2 (9-inch) greased and floured pans or one 9 x 13-inch pan.
    Layer pink and white layers until all is used.
    When all is in pan, cut down through, so colors will mix.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 until done (about 45 minutes).
