Ingredients

3/4 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. plus 2 Tbsp. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 egg plus 1 tsp. water
1/2 c. chopped pecans
1/4 c. maraschino cherries, finely chopped
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
Preparation

Place shortening, vanilla, sugar, egg and water in bowl and beat. Add cherries and nuts. Mix well. Sift together dry ingredients. Gradually add sifted mixture to batter and mix well. Knead dough with hands. Chill dough until firm. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 425\u00b0 for 6 to 8 minutes. Garnish cookies while still warm with a sliver of cherry. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
