Black Walnut Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. butter
    1/2 c. shortening
    2 c. sugar
    5 eggs, separated
    1 c. buttermilk
    1 tsp. baking soda
    2 c. all-purpose flour
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. black walnuts
    1 small can coconut
    1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
Preparation
    Cream butter and shortening.
    Gradually add sugar.
    Beat well at medium speed.
    Add egg yolks one at a time.
    Beat well after each one.
    Combine buttermilk and soda.
    Stir until dissolved.
    Add flour; alternate buttermilk mixture, ending with flour.
    Stir in vanilla; add 1 cup walnuts and coconut.
    Stir well.
    Beat egg whites at room temperature and cream of tartar until stiff peaks form.
    Fold into batter.
    Pour into 3 greased and floured 9-inch pans.
    Bake for 22 to 25 minutes at 350\u00b0 or until toothpick comes out clean.
    Let cool completely.
