Date Nut Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. boiling water
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
    1 egg, beaten
    2 1/4 c. sifted flour
    1/4 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 tsp. baking soda
    1 c. chopped walnuts
    1 Tbsp. oil
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Pour boiling water over dates and let stand 10 minutes. Add sugar to beaten egg in bowl.
    Add flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda.
    Mix alternately with date mixture.
    Stir in oil or melted shortening, vanilla and nuts.
    Pour into large loaf pan (10 x 5 x 3-inch) and bake 1 hour.
    Test with toothpick in middle. Freezes well.
