4 c. flour
1 c. shortening
2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
2/3 c. buttermilk
1 c. quartered cherries
1 c. any kind candied fruits
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 c. chopped pecans
2 c. chopped dates
Preparation

Sift flour, measure 4 cups, then sift again with baking soda and salt.
Cream shortening.
Add sugar and eggs and beat until light and fluffy.
Add milk and flour.
Add nuts and fruits. Chill dough for several hours.
Drop by teaspoonful about 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet.
Top with 1/2 red or green cherry or pecan half.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 375\u00b0.
Yields 8 dozen.
