Chocolate Chip Meringue Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. sifted flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/3 c. shortening
    1/2 c. brown sugar
    1/2 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 egg yolks, beaten
    3 Tbsp. water
    1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
    2 egg whites
    1 c. packed brown sugar
    pecans (optional)
Preparation
    Sift together dry ingredients; set aside.
    Combine in a bowl the sugars and shortening; beat until light.
    Add vanilla, egg yolks and water; beat until smooth.
    Add dry ingredients.
    Spread mixture evenly in a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
    Sprinkle over top the chocolate chips.
    Place the egg whites in a bowl and beat until frothy.
    Add, while beating, the 1 cup brown sugar.
    Beat until the sugar is completely blended.
    Spread evenly over batter. Sprinkle with chopped pecans, if desired.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 30 minutes.
