Delicious Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    water
    1 c. salt
    1 gal. cucumbers
    2 Tbsp. alum
    2 Tbsp. pickling spices
    3 c. sugar
Preparation
    Dissolve salt in 11 cups water.
    Pour over cucumbers (size that will slice).
    Let stand in cool place 2 weeks (keeping covered and skimmed).
    After 2 weeks, wash off the brine and slice lengthwise, then cover with water and alum.
    Let stand 3 hours and drain. Next, pour vinegar to cover.
    Add pickling spices.
    Let stand 24 hours.
    Drain; discard solution.
    Add 3 cups sugar 3 mornings straight, stirring gently to dissolve the sugar (this makes the syrup).
    Put in gallon jugs or jars.
    (Don't need to seal.)
