French Style Onion Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    5 c. thinly sliced sweet Spanish onions, separated into rings
    1/4 tsp. sugar
    1/4 c. butter
    3 cans (10 1/2 oz.) condensed beef broth
    1 qt. water
    salt and pepper to taste
    6 slices buttered French bread, toasted
    Parmesan cheese
Preparation
    If any of the onion rings are large, cut them in half; sprinkle with the sugar.
    In a large non-aluminum saucepot melt the butter; add the onion and cook gently, stirring often until a pale gold color.
    Add the beef broth and the water; cover and simmer for 45 minutes.
    Stir in salt and pepper.
    Refrigerate.
    At serving time reheat and ladle into individual ovenproof casseroles.
    Top with the bread and generously sprinkle with the cheese.
    Bake at 400\u00b0 for 5 to 8 minutes.
    Makes 6 servings.
