Ingredients

1 c. Crisco shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. molasses (Picket's)
4 c. flour, sifted
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
Preparation

Thoroughly cream together shortening and sugar.
Add egg and mix well; stir in molasses.
Sift together dry ingredients and combine with molasses mixture.
Chill thoroughly.
Roll dough into balls 1-inch in diameter; roll in sugar.
Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 18 to 20 minutes.
Store in covered container with a slice of bread to keep softened (a slice of apple will also work).
Leave bread slice out if hard cookies are desired.
