Election Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 c. milk
    2 c. sugar
    1 c. yeast
    2 c. sugar
    2 c. butter
    3 eggs
    1/2 nutmeg
    1 Tbsp. cinnamon
    1 lb. raisins
    a gill of brandy
Preparation
    Stir milk, sugar and yeast to a batter and let stand overnight; in the morning, add sugar, butter, eggs, nutmeg, cinnamon, raisins and brandy.
    Brown sugar is much better than white for this kind of cake and it is improved by dissolving a half-teaspoon of soda in a tablespoon of milk in the morning.
    It should stand in the greased pans and rise some time until quite light before baking.
