Gert Gurganus Sweet Milk Cornbread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. yellow corn meal
    1 c. sifted self-rising flour
    1/4 c. sugar (optional)
    1/2 tsp. salt
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1 egg
    1 c. milk
    1/4 c. melted shortening
Preparation
    Sift together the corn meal, flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.
    Beat egg.
    Add milk; add to first mixture.
    Add shortening.
    Pour into hot, greased 10-inch skillet or pan, muffin pan or corn stick pan.
    Bake at 375\u00b0 to 400\u00b0 for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
    Yields 6 servings.
