Ingredients

1/4 c. shortening or vegetable oil
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. all-purpose or whole wheat flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts
Preparation

Heat oven to 350\u00b0.
Heat shortening over low heat until melted; remove from heat.
Mix in brown sugar, egg and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients.
Spread in greased square baking pan, 8 x 8 x 2-inch.
Bake 25 minutes.
Cut into 1 3/4-inch squares while warm.
Makes about 1 1/2 dozen cookies; 120 calories each.
