Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 qt. cucumbers, sliced
    2 green peppers, sliced
    1/3 c. salt
    6 medium onions, sliced
    3 cloves garlic, crushed
    5 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
    3 c. cider vinegar
    1 tsp. pickling spice
    2 tsp. mustard seed
    1/4 tsp. alum
Preparation
    Mix the first 5 ingredients together and soak 3 hours in 1-quart water with 2 trays of ice, stirring occasionally.
    Mix remaining ingredients together as a pickling syrup.
    Drain vegetables.
    Combine with syrup in stainless steel or enameled kettle and heat, just to boiling.
    Seal in hot jars.
    Makes approximately 8 pints.
