Peppernuts(Christmas Cookie) - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sugar
    1 c. shortening
    1/2 c. sour cream
    1 c. dark corn syrup
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 tsp. cream of tartar
    1/2 tsp. salt
    4 tsp. crushed anise seed
    5 c. flour
Preparation
    Mix together sugar, shortening, sour cream and corn syrup. Add dry ingredients for stiff dough, using more or less flour; you may have to use your hands.
    Mix in crushed anise seed.
    Wrap dough in waxed paper and chill a few days.
    On floured surface, roll small handful of dough into a snake-like strand, the thickness of a husky pencil.
    Cut into 1/2-inch pieces and place on cookie sheet.
    Bake at 375\u00b0 for 15 to 20 minutes; watch very closely, bottoms burn easily.
