Spinach Vegetable Dip - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sour cream
    1 c. mayonnaise
    1 pkg. Knorr vegetable soup mix
    1 can water chestnuts, chopped
    1 box frozen spinach (chopped), thawed and well drained
    dash of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce (optional)
    1 lb. medium onions (4 to 5)
    1 qt. chicken broth
    2 cloves garlic, mashed
    1/4 tsp. thyme
    1/2 bay leaf
    1/2 c. sherry (not cooking sherry, but table sherry)
    8 to 12 slices Provolone cheese
    2 Tbsp. melted butter
    1 qt. beef broth
    1/4 tsp. oregano
    1/8 tsp. marjoram
    white pepper
    croutons or thinly sliced French bread
Preparation
    Saute onions in butter until slightly browned, stirring frequently. Add broths and seasonings. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes. Add sherry; return to a boil.
    Remove from heat. Cool, skim fat, remove bay leaf and refrigerate until needed.
