Lee'S Hard Candy - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 3/4 c. sugar
    1 c. water
    1 1/2 c. white Karo syrup
    oil of clove, cinnamon or peppermint
    1 bottle food color
Preparation
    Stir first 3 ingredients together over medium heat until sugar dissolves and it begins boiling. Leave on stove eye and don't stir anymore. Cook until mixture reaches 310\u00b0 on candy thermometer (about 45 minutes). Remove from heat and let it settle. Stir in choice of food color; mix well to avoid streaks. Stir in flavoring (Lee uses about half the bottle, probably about 2 tablespoons). Mix well under a vent or fan. Fumes are very strong. Sift powdered sugar onto a 4-sided cookie sheet. Pour mixture over it and let cool completely. Use handle of knife to break it up.
