Burnt Sugar Cake With Caramel Frosting - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    3/4 c. cold water
    3/4 c. shortening
    2 eggs
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. milk
    2 1/2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1 scant tsp. soda
Preparation
    Burn 1/2 cup sugar in a steel pan to a deep brown; add water and shake well until all sugar is dissolved and set aside to cool. Cream shortening and sugar thoroughly; add egg yolks, that have been beaten.
    Add milk and mix flour, which has been sifted 3 times with the baking powder and soda.
    Add burnt sugar liquid and the beaten egg whites and vanilla.
    Bake in layers.
    Quickly cover cake with Caramel Frosting.
