Burnt Sugar Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    3/4 c. cold water
    3/4 c. shortening
    2 eggs
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. sweet milk
    2 1/2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. soda
Preparation
    Burn 1/2 cup sugar in steel skillet to a deep brown.
    Add water and shake well until all sugar is dissolved.
    Cool.
    Cream shortening and sugar.
    Add beaten egg yolks.
    Add milk with flour that has been sifted 3 times with baking powder and soda.
    Stir in burnt sugar liquid.
    Then fold in beaten egg whites.
    Bake in 3 layers at 350\u00b0 until done.
    Frost with caramel icing.
