German Chocolate Cake - cooking recipe

1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1/2 c. boiling water
4 eggs, separated
2 1/2 c. cake flour
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla
dash of salt
1 German chocolate bar
Preparation

Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water and set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add well beaten egg yolks.
Dissolve soda in 1/2 cup buttermilk and wait to add later.
Add remaining milk alternately with flour then add soda mixture, chocolate, vanilla and salt.
Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Bake in 3 layers at 350\u00b0 for 40 minutes.
