Caramels - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. butter or margarine
    1 lb. (2 1/4 c.) brown sugar
    dash of salt
    1 c. light corn syrup
    1 (15 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Melt butter or margarine in a heavy 3-quart saucepan.
    Add brown sugar and salt, stirring until thoroughly mixed.
    Blend in corn syrup.
    Add sweetened condensed milk gradually, stirring constantly.
    Cook and stir, over medium heat, until candy reaches firm ball stage (245\u00b0), 12 to 15 minutes.
    Remove from heat.
    Stir in vanilla.
    Pour into 9 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish.
    Cool thoroughly.
    Cut into small squares.
    Wrap each piece individually.
