Southbridge Pea Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 pkg. yellow split peas
    5 c. water
    1 ham bone (with bits of ham attached)
    1 onion, cut in quarters
    1 bay leaf
    1/2 envelope Lipton dried onion soup mix
Preparation
    Cover split peas with water in large pot and add rest of ingredients except dried onion soup mix.
    Bring to a boil and simmer 3 to 4 hours until peas are mushy.
    Remove ham bone and bay leaf and add more water if soup is too thick.
    Add 1/2 package dried onion soup mix and cook another 1/2 hour.
    Serve with croutons.
