Apple Dumplings - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    6 small apples
    2 c. sugar
    2 c. water
    1/4 tsp. cinnamon
    1/4 tsp. nutmeg
    1/2 c. butter
    2 c. flour
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1/4 tsp. salt
    3/4 c. shortening
    1/2 c. milk
Preparation
    Combine sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook 5 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; add butter.
    Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Mix with dry ingredients the shortening, then add milk. Roll out dough until 1/4 inch thick; cut into 6 squares. Place sliced apples in square. Sprinkle with additional sugar, spices and a little flour; dot with butter. Bring corners of pastry and pinch edges together firmly. Place in well greased pan and pour sauce over all. Bake at 375\u00b0 for 45 minutes, basting often.
