Devil'S Food Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. shortening (oleo, butter or Crisco)
    1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
    2 eggs
    1/2 c. cocoa
    2 c. sifted cake flour
    1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1 c. sour milk or buttermilk
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Cream the shortening until like thick cream.
    Add sugar a little at a time until light and fluffy.
    Add well beaten egg yolks and blend thoroughly.
    Add enough hot water to the cocoa to make a smooth paste, then add enough more to make 1 cupful of cocoa mixture.
    Add to the creamed mixture.
    Sift flour, soda and salt and add alternately with the sour milk to which the vanilla has been added.
    Mix thoroughly.
    Fold in carefully the stiffly beaten egg whites.
    Turn into 2 greased and lightly floured 9-inch layer cake pans.
    Bake for 30 to 40 minutes at 375\u00b0.
    Frost with desired frosting.
