Austrian Almond Squares - cooking recipe
Ingredients

1 c. soft butter
1 egg, separated
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. sugar
2 c. sifted flour
1 c. sliced almonds
Preparation

Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
Add egg yolk and beat well.
Sift together flour and nutmeg. Gradually add to creamed mixture, stirring well.
Spread dough evenly in a 15 1/4 x 10 1/4-inch pan.
Beat egg white slightly and brush over top.
Smooth surface with your fingertips and sprinkle almonds over dough and press in.
Bake in a slow oven at 275\u00b0 for 1 hour.
While still warm, cut into 40 (2-inch) squares.
Cut 5 lengthwise and 8 crosswise strips.
