Date Nut Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3/4 c. chopped nuts
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/4 c. shortening (or 1/2 stick butter)
    3/4 c. boiling water
    2 eggs
    1/2 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. sugar
    1 1/2 c. sifted flour
Preparation
    Combine nuts, dates, baking soda and salt in a bowl.
    Add shortening and water.
    Let stand for 15 minutes.
    Beat eggs slightly; add vanilla.
    Stir in the sugar and flour.
    Add to date mixture.
    Do not overmix.
    Place in a greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
    Bake 1 hour at 350\u00b0.
    Cool before slicing.
