Green Tomato Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 peck (4 qt.) green tomatoes
    1 1/2 lb. onions
    1/4 c. salt
    1 3/4 c. brown sugar
    1/2 qt. vinegar
    3 Tbsp. pickle spice
    1 pt. water
Preparation
    Slice tomatoes and onions; let stand overnight with salt sprinkled on them.
    Drain.
    Add sugar, water, spice and vinegar. Cook until tender (5 minutes).
    Pour hot pickles and juice into hot jars and seal.
    Makes about 6 pints.
