German Chocolate Cake - cooking recipe

1 c. shortening
4 egg yolks
1/2 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 pkg. German sweet chocolate
2 5/8 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk
4 egg whites
Preparation

Cream shortening and sugar; add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after every addition.
Dissolve chocolate in boiling water; cool slightly and add to egg mixture.
Sift flour, salt and soda together.
Add to egg mixture alternately with buttermilk. Mix well and add vanilla.
Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into batter.
Pour into 3 greased cake pans.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 25 minutes or until done; check with toothpick or if it springs back when touched.
Frost with Cream Cheese Frosting.
