Black Walnut Cake* * * * * - cooking recipe
Ingredients

1 c. butter or margarine, softened
2 c. sugar
5 eggs, separated
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. chopped black walnuts
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
Cream Cheese Frosting

Preparation

Cream butter and gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Combine buttermilk and soda, stirring until soda is dissolved.
Add flour to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.
Stir in vanilla and walnuts.
Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff and fold into batter.
Pour into 3 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans.
Bake in a preheated 350\u00b0 oven for 22 to 25 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes.
Remove from pans and cool on rack. Spread with Cream Cheese Frosting and press walnut halves around the sides.
