Caramels - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 c. sugar
    1 (No. 2) can dark Karo syrup
    1 c. evaporated milk
    1/2 stick margarine
Preparation
    Put sugar, butter (margarine), syrup and half of milk into pan. Allow it to come to a boil.
    Add remaining milk slowly.
    Cook until thick, stirring constantly.
    Takes about 1 hour slow cooking. (First samples in water.)
    Done when sample clicks against rim of glass but is still soft inside.
    When done, add 1 tablespoon of vanilla or walnut flavoring.
    Pour into buttered pan.
    Allow to set until firm.
    Cut in pieces.
