1 c. enriched flour
1 stick butter
1/2 c. plus 1 Tbsp. sugar
2 eggs
2 Tbsp. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. chopped dates
3/4 c. chopped walnuts
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. flour
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. butter or margarine
1 Tbsp. milk
2 tsp. freshly grated lemon peel
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Preparation

Mix flour, sugar, salt and baking soda in a medium size bowl. Cut butter with pastry blender or 2 knives, until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
Add milk, lemon peel and vanilla; stir with a fork until moistened.
Gather dough; press into a ball, then shape into a 7 x 2 x 12-inch rectangle.
Wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour, until firm.
