Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. firm small cucumbers
    2 seeded green peppers
    8 small white onions, peeled and sliced
    1 qt. crushed ice
    1/2 c. salt
    5 c. vinegar
    5 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    2 tsp. mustard seed
    1 tsp. celery seed
Preparation
    Place cucumbers (sliced), green peppers, ice and onions in layers in a crock with salt.
    Cover and place in refrigerator overnight or 6 hours.
    Drain.
    Make a syrup of vinegar, sugar and spices.
    Add these to cucumbers.
    Heat slowly with very little stirring.
    Scald, do not boil.
    Place pickles in sterilized jars and seal at once.
