Refrigerator Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    16 c. sliced cucumbers
    4 c. sliced onions
    3 Tbsp. salt
    4 c. sugar
    2 c. vinegar
    1 tsp. celery seed
    1 tsp. turmeric
    1/2 tsp. alum
    Ice
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers & onions. Cover with salt & ice. Let stand 3 hours. Drain & put in gallon jar. Dissolve sugar, vinegar, celery seed, turmeric & alum. Pour over cucumbers & onion & put in refrigerator. They are ready to eat in 7-10 days. Can be kept in refrigerator for a long time. I have had them for a year.
