Ingredients

1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar

Preparation

Beat shortening until fluffy.
Add sugars, beating well.
Add egg and vanilla; beat well.
Combine flour, salt, soda and cream of tartar.
Gradually add to creamed mixture, beating well.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls.
Roll in sugar and place 2-inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool 2 minutes on cookie sheet and remove to rack to cool completely.
Makes 5 dozen.
